Gout is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. It occurs when there is a uric acid build up, typically in the ankles, toes, and knees. It is estimated that more than 3% of the adults in the country suffer from this condition. While there are medications that can treat symptoms of gout, the following traditional and alternative treatments can also help in effectively managing its symptoms.
Epsom salt
Epsom salt is known to prevent or reduce the incidence of gout attacks. It is rich in magnesium, which can neutralize the effect of uric acid crystals in the joints, thereby lowering the risk of gout flare ups. Mix a cup or two of Epsom salt in the bath and soak the entire body or specific joints for relief.
Hot water bags
Doctors recommend topical applications like hot water bags for mild inflammation due to gout. Apart from this, applying ice packs on the affected areas can also provide temporary relief from the pain caused due to inflammation.
Water
Hydration is one of the most crucial methods of providing relief from gout symptoms apart from typical medications. Drinking plenty of water can significantly reduce inflammation as it kick-starts the kidneys to filter out the excess fluid containing uric acid crystals. While water in the form of broths and herbal teas can provide therapeutic relief, steer clear from alcohols and sugary drinks as they are rich in purines – a compound that causes gout.
Malic acid foods
Many doctors recommend eating foods rich in malic acid apart from taking conventional medications to effectively manage gout symptoms. This is because malic acid is known to lower uric acid levels. It is found in fruits like apples, watermelons, and grapes. However, these also contain fructose, which may aggravate gout symptoms. Hence, it is necessary to consult a doctor to know the quantity safe for consumption or one can stick to other foods rich in malic acid like carrots, apricots, beans, and broccoli.
Potassium rich foods
Potassium is known to effectively manage gout symptoms. It helps the tissues and organs in the body to function properly and reduces uric acid crystals in the joints. Although banana is rich in potassium, it is also rich in fructose, which can worsen gout. Hence it is recommended to eat other foods with a high potassium like dark leafy greens and avocados.
Cherries
Cherries are known to reduce the risk of gout flare ups. This is because they contain high levels of anthocyanins, an anti-inflammatory compound. Anthocyanins can effectively reduce uric acid crystals present in the joints, thereby providing relief from pain due to inflammation. Other foods that contain anthocyanins include aubergine, red cabbage, and other tubers.
Ginger
Ginger contains anti-inflammatory compounds like gingerol and shogaol that are known to reduce gout symptoms. It also reduces uric acid levels in the body (hyperuricemia), which can further prevent accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Ginger can also be applied topically on the affected area. Mix one tablespoon of ginger paste in lukewarm water. Pour the mixture on a washcloth and apply it on the affected area for 15 to 30 minutes for relief.
